The announcement
On 6 November the ECB released consolidated banking figures for the end of June 2026. Total assets held by credit institutions headquartered in the European Union reached €34.99 trillion, an increase of 5.18% from €33.27 trillion a year earlier. These are aggregated balance-sheet data, not a forecast for any individual bank.
The release also reports an aggregate non-performing loans ratio of 1.99% and a Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 16.43%. Its return-on-equity figure was 5.31% for the first six months of 2026 and should not be read as an annualised rate.
What it means for account customers
For people comparing bank accounts, system-wide assets and capital ratios help explain financial-sector conditions, but cannot substitute for checking the specific institution, applicable deposit-guarantee arrangement, contractual account conditions and fees.
Our reading: the data are a useful background measure of EU banking resilience. They do not show that one retail account is safer or better priced than another. Use bank-level information and the official account tariff when making a practical choice.
