EBA updates bank governance guidelines with a focus on proportionality

Revised governance guidance addresses roles, internal controls and proportionality under CRD VI.

The announcement

The European Banking Authority published revised Guidelines on internal governance on 5 November 2026. The update takes account of changes made by CRD VI and seeks to simplify parts of the supervisory framework while maintaining safeguards for sound bank management.

The guidance addresses the mapping of responsibilities for management bodies and key function holders, organisational arrangements, conflicts of interest and internal control functions. The revised text also covers governance considerations for third-country branches.

What it means for account customers

These are governance and supervisory standards. Their publication does not itself amend the price of a current account, create a new deposit product, or change a published retail welcome-bonus deadline.

Our view: stronger, more clearly assigned governance responsibilities can be relevant to how banks control operational risks. Retail customers should still judge the particular banking service using its current contractual terms and availability.
