The announcement

The European Central Bank announced on 30 October that it had selected two network service provider groups for the digital euro service platform. The first combines Nexi Payments and Deutsche Telekom Business Solutions; the second combines Telefónica de España, Telefónica Global Solutions and Indra.

The connectivity contracts are part of preparation for the digital euro pilot and for a possible future issuance. The first-ranked provider's contract already covers the connectivity needed for the pilot, while the second provider is due to start in May 2027. The ECB says both groups should be ready from 2029 for a potential full service, subject to a future issuance decision.

What it means for account customers

For bank customers, this is infrastructure news rather than a new account that can be opened today. Commercial banks and other payment service providers would still be the customer-facing layer if a digital euro is eventually issued.

Our view: the selection is a concrete sign that the project is moving from design work into operational preparation. It does not change the terms of today's current accounts, cards or savings products, so customers should continue to compare those products on their existing fees, access and protections.
