The announcement
The European Banking Authority opened a discussion on selected indicators used in Taxonomy disclosures on 1 July. Its stated aim was to simplify reporting and make the information more useful. The consultation closed on 12 August 2026.
The paper covered indicators for banks and investment firms, including fee income, trading activities and group reporting. It was a consultation step towards technical advice, rather than a new sustainability label for retail accounts.
What it means for account customers
For an account customer, a bank's environmental reporting and the terms of a particular product answer different questions. A sustainability claim does not explain whether a card carries an annual charge or which transactions are included.
Our view: readers should be able to inspect both. Look for a clearly defined environmental claim and its supporting disclosure, then assess the account's ordinary costs independently. This July announcement alone cannot establish whether any named account meets a customer's environmental preferences.
