Intesa Sanpaolo says its offer for Monte dei Paschi will go ahead

The Italian banking group confirmed that its public tender and exchange offer for MPS will proceed after the target's shareholder meeting.

The announcement

Intesa Sanpaolo announced on 30 October that its voluntary public tender and exchange offer for Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena would proceed. The update followed MPS's shareholder meeting on 29 October and a series of regulatory approvals obtained earlier in the week.

The transaction is still a corporate process rather than a completed integration of the two retail banks. Intesa's announcement explains that the offer continues under the applicable Italian takeover rules and that further steps remain before control is completed.

What it means for account customers

For retail customers, a takeover announcement does not by itself change an account tariff, deposit rate or branch arrangement. Any customer-facing changes would need to be communicated through the banks' normal product and contractual channels.

Our view: the transaction is worth following because it could reshape one of Europe's largest national banking markets. Until there are concrete product changes, BankRanking will keep comparing Intesa and MPS products on the terms actually published for customers rather than assuming future synergies.
