The announcement
The ECB announced the selection of 36 payment service providers for its digital euro pilot on 14 July 2026. More than 50 providers had applied. The selected group includes banks and non-bank providers across the euro area.
The planned exercise will run for 12 months from the second half of 2027. It will test technical functions, operating processes and user experience in a controlled environment involving central bank staff and selected merchants.
What it means for account customers
The beta digital euro used in the pilot will not have legal-tender status. Selection therefore does not mean that customers can already open a public digital euro account with a participating provider.
For people comparing current accounts, the useful distinction is between a future payment project and a service available today. Our view is to evaluate a bank on the tariff, payment functions and support it currently offers, while following the pilot for evidence of future capabilities.
