Digital euro innovation work opens to a broader group

Experimentation and exploration will examine possible future services.

The announcement

The Eurosystem announced a new call for digital euro innovation activities on 28 September. Participants can include payment providers, technology businesses, merchants, consumer associations, public bodies and researchers.

The two workstreams cover practical experimentation and exploration of technologies for possible future releases. The ECB says an issuance decision would follow the adoption of the relevant EU legislation; preparation does not itself settle that decision.

What it means for account customers

This wider involvement matters because a payment method needs to work for people accepting money as well as those sending it. Useful design must address ordinary transactions, rather than technical demonstrations alone.

Our view: judge innovation announcements by the problem they aim to solve and the evidence that follows. Potential features should remain clearly labelled as potential. They should not be mixed into a current-account comparison as if every customer could already use them or as proof that a particular account is better.
