ECB explores an instant-payment connection with Brazil

The proposal is being assessed; a consumer service has not been launched.

The announcement

The ECB announced approval to assess a possible connection between the Eurosystem's TIPS platform and Brazil's Pix system on 24 September. The work with Brazil's central bank covers technical, operational, legal and business questions.

The stated ambition is to facilitate faster and potentially cheaper cross-border payments. A feasibility assessment, however, is not the same as a completed connection or a retail service available in a banking app.

What it means for account customers

For someone sending money abroad, speed is only one part of the comparison. Currency conversion, the amount received and any intermediary charges can also affect the result.

Our view: compare services that are actually available for the relevant destination and currency. Ask for the total amount debited and the expected amount received. An infrastructure announcement is useful evidence of direction, but cannot establish the final exchange rate, customer fee or launch date of a future transfer product.
