The announcement
Euro area banks reported tighter credit standards in the ECB's July 2026 bank lending survey. The net share reporting tightening was 7% for business lending, 9% for housing loans and 12% for consumer credit in the second quarter.
Risk perceptions and reduced willingness to take risk were important drivers. Demand for business loans rose slightly, while demand from households weakened. These are survey measures of changes, not the percentage of all applications rejected.
What it means for account customers
A current account and a credit decision should not be treated as the same product choice. Opening an account does not establish that a customer will qualify for an overdraft or a future loan.
Our view: assess the payment account on its own terms first. If credit is important, obtain a separate eligibility assessment and written offer. A sector-wide survey helps explain the environment, but cannot predict a particular bank's decision on an individual application.
