The announcement
The EBA announced on 14 October that USDC, issued by Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS, had been classified as a significant e-money token under MiCA. It is the first token to receive that classification in the EU.
The announcement schedules dual supervision from 12 November 2026. Certain responsibilities, including areas concerning reserves, liquidity and redemption planning, move to the EBA, while other areas remain with France's ACPR.
What it means for account customers
A significant-token classification describes regulatory treatment. It should not be presented as a recommendation to buy the token or as evidence that it is interchangeable with a euro current account.
Our view: customers should identify exactly what they hold, who owes them money and which terms apply before comparing digital-finance products. A banking app can contain different kinds of products. A supervisory milestone is a reason to read the details, rather than a shortcut around understanding the product and its risks.
