The announcement
The EU's three financial supervisory authorities issued a joint statement on 31 July about ICT risks associated with frontier AI models. It calls for a consistent, risk-based supervisory approach across financial sectors.
The statement emphasises governance, risk management, prevention, detection and response. It also discusses oversight of critical technology providers under DORA. It does not announce a ban on AI use in banking.
What it means for account customers
For customers, the presence of an AI feature in a banking app says little on its own about reliability or accountability. Convenient automation and access to a clear support route need to be assessed separately.
Our view: when choosing a digital account, consider how you would freeze a card, recover access and contact the provider if an automated process went wrong. Those are practical service questions. This supervisory statement is an industry risk signal, rather than a security rating of any individual bank or app.
