Consumers' inflation expectations rose in August

The survey measures household expectations, rather than realised inflation.

The announcement

The ECB's August Consumer Expectations Survey, released on 18 September, showed median expected inflation over the next year rising to 3.0%, from 2.9% in July. Perceived inflation over the previous year stayed at 3.5%.

Expected nominal income growth was unchanged at 1.0%, while expected spending growth remained 3.6%. These results describe what surveyed consumers expected, not an official forecast or the eventual inflation outcome.

What it means for account customers

For household banking decisions, the difference between nominal interest and purchasing power deserves attention. A headline savings rate alone cannot explain how a balance's real value will change.

Our view: keep everyday account costs and savings returns visible as separate figures. A welcome benefit is also different from a recurring return. Use the survey as context for financial uncertainty, while checking each product's actual rate, term and restrictions rather than treating an expectation as a guaranteed result.
